Royal British Legion, has organised a Remembrance event for the town that will pay a fitting tribute to local servicemen and women, both past and present.
Scores of club officials, volunteers and players, including many from the youth teams, will take part in the Forces Day Celebration on November 7th, the day before Remembrance Sunday.
Activities include assisting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal with collections through the town, at the railway station and the club itself; an Under 10 youth match against an RAF representative team; a parade around the pitch by Stamford ex- servicemen; and tributes to three generations of heroes by the Mayor of Stamford before the ‘local derby’ league match against Grantham Town kicks off.
All forces personnel, both current and no longer serving, will have discounted entry to the ground for the match and on Remembrance Sunday itself, members of The Young Daniels will participate in the town’s Remembrance Service, by laying two wreaths at the Memorial.
“With 300 local youngsters at our club we always aim to be actively involved at the heart of the Stamford community. We draw our fantastic support from the local community that’s why we want to be actively involved with our locally based forces and the Stamford branch of The Royal British Legion to ensure this weekend is extremely
special,” explained Ian Evley of Stamford AFC, and the brainchild of the remembrance events.
“We want to make this a family event where the often overlooked dependents of current and ex- servicemen spend some quality time together as a family and enjoy a great event”
For those young and young at heart, The RAF careers service will be hosting a “beat the goalkeeper” competition inside the ground. There will be bar food available and a licensed bar in the club, from where the match can be viewed if preferred.
