Stamford 3 Quorn 1

The Daniels got the better of former manager Dougie Keast’s Quorn side at the Vic Couzens Stadium on Tuesday evening, in the process avenging an October League Cup reverse against the Leicestershire club.

A young and energetic visiting side went ahead seven minutes in when Tom Byrne’s shot struck team mate Liam TURNER and left Daniels keeper Chris Wright stranded as the ball trickled over the line.

Stamford pressure saw Dan Cotton’s crossfield pass pick out David Cobb who finished wildly, and then Cotton was too high from an Adam Weston pass.

Stamford equalised after 37 minutes with another deflected effort, home midfielder Adam WESTON the beneficiary on this occasion.

Four minutes before the interval the Daniels took the lead. Cotton’s free kick was superbly tipped away by Quorn keeper Steve Norris, Cobb’s follow up bounced to safety off the far post but when Tony Battersby returned the ball into the danger zone Paul MALONE bundled the ball home.

On the attack against Quorn....

Quorn quickly returned to the attack with Wright saving well from Sam Wood’s free kick.

Stamford increased their advantage five minutes into the second period. Battersby’s lay off found Cobb whose ball over the defence sent Phil STEBBING clear to hold off the challenge of a couple of defenders and slide the ball under the advancing Norris.

Quorn almost hauled themselves back into the game five minutes later when Byrne was thwarted by Wright’s block on the line with a foot.

After 59 minutes Stamford had the chance to wrap up the win when Stebbing was fouled in the box but his poorly struck penalty was turned onto the post by Norris.

Quorn had plenty of the ball in the closing stages without posing a threat to the home goal.
